I'm too short-sighted to get LASEK (-8), but would like to look into lens implants. I initially went to Optimax, as the initial quote they gave me on the phone wasn't bad. This then became gradually more expensive as I went through the screening process.
I am reluctant to use a business that has such a flippant attitude to their customers - any other recommendations?

The cost of surgery depends on what is done, the phone quote is based on the easy case as they don't know anything about you. As you are screened, they find out more about you --- your prescription, your corneal thickness, your aberraton profile. It then becomes apparent whether custom LASIK, PRK, LASEK, contact lens implants or clear lens extraction will work best for you.
If you call up a car dealer and ask "how much does a car cost", you will get a low quote. Once there and they find out you want power windows, auto transmission, air conditioning and a sunroof the price will increase.
